NEP: National Education Policy

NEP: National Education Policy 2020

The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 is a comprehensive framework for education in India, from pre-school to higher education. It was approved by the Union Cabinet of India on July 29, 2020, and replaces the previous National Policy on Education, which was formulated in 1986.

Key changes:

📔 New curricular and pedagogical structure:
📖 Shift from the current 10+2 structure to a 5+3+3+4 structure, with a focus on foundational literacy and numeracy in the early years.
📖 One of the most significant changes is the shift from a 10+2 structure to a 5+3+3+4 structure. This means that students will spend 5 years in the foundational stage (ages 3-8), 3 years in the preparatory stage (ages 8-11), 3 years in the middle stage (ages 11-14), and 4 years in the secondary stage (ages 14-18).
📖 More flexibility in choosing subjects, and greater emphasis on vocational education and training.

📔 Holistic development:
📖 Focus on developing students’ academic, social, emotional, and physical skills in a balanced way.

📔 Increased access and equity:
📖 Universal access to pre-primary education (ages 3-5).
📖 More opportunities for disadvantaged and underprivileged students.

📔 Increased investment in teacher education:
📖 All teachers to have a four-year Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) degree.
📖 More investment in teacher professional development.

📔 More autonomy for educational institutions:
📖 More freedom for schools and colleges to design their own curricula, pedagogies, and assessments.

In addition to these key changes, the NEP 2020 also includes a number of other reforms, such as:

📗 Emphasis on creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
📗 Promotion of multilingualism and Indian languages.
📗 Integration of technology into education.
📗 Focus on research and innovation.
